Byron Katie is best known for developing The Work, a method of self-inquiry that helps people question the thoughts that cause suffering. After experiencing years of deep depression, Katie had a powerful realisation: much of the pain people feel does not come directly from events themselves, but from the unquestioned beliefs we hold about those events.
From this insight she developed a very simple process built around four questions. These questions invite people to look closely at a stressful thought and examine whether it is absolutely true. Rather than trying to force positive thinking, The Work encourages curiosity, honesty, and openness.
Many people find that when they examine their thoughts in this way, rigid beliefs begin to loosen. What once felt certain may no longer seem so solid. This shift often creates space for greater calm, compassion, and clarity.
A central aspect of Katie’s philosophy is that reality itself is rarely the real source of suffering. Instead, suffering often arises when the mind argues with what has already happened. Learning to question these inner arguments can bring a surprising sense of freedom.
Her work has been used by individuals, therapists, and educators around the world as a gentle tool for emotional resilience and self-reflection.
Key idea
Freedom can begin when we gently question the stressful thoughts we tend to believe.
